Personal Photography Project || First Ideas

For the Personal Theme project,

Possibly these are some brainstorming thought for the concept I want to work on:

  • This is a series of photos being done in narrative form to discuss the point of view for artists like me who struggle on wanting to be an artist and endure the stress and struggles on wanting their voice to be heard.
  • The narrative presents overhead shots where it is meant to feel like a simulation of an artist who is struggling in what they want to be when they grow up, assuming somebody else or an environmental factor is trying to stop them from overlooking the negatives.
  • The goal of the photos is to feel an emotional depth from each photo, with the photos gradually losing their color like how overwhelming thoughts and emotions can cloud up their mind physically and internally.
  • The thought of such a pain is overwhelming on it's own, but also taking away somebody's passion is just as horrible.

Inspirations for my research for the Personal Photography Project:

  • Mary Ellen Mark - A photographer very well known for her works that are in black and white, presenting themes about teenagers and their struggles. A well known work referred to as Streetwise (1983) previews this well and shows the psychological effects it causes to children. Mark had a deep interest in capturing the emotional states of young people, which sometimes touched on the anxiety and burdens they carry.
  • Man Ray - A photographer that utilized surrealism, dadaism, experimental photography. His works are eerie and unsettling, sometimes being unnatural. One of his works, Le Violon d’Ingres (1924) – a female nude with violin f-holes drawn on her back; playful but oddly objectifying and eerie.
  • Bill Brandt - Photographer and photojournalist that used high-contrast black-and-white photography, surrealist influence. His most notable work, Nude, London (1950s) exaggerated limbs and looming shadows create an unsettling feeling. The familiar human body becomes alien, evoking visual stress.
